Sony has just released some more details about Resistance: Burning Skies, the upcoming shooter for the PlayStation Vita, including a concrete release and an impressive cover.

The PlayStation Vita is out next week, on February 22, alongside a variety of games that will accompany its launch. This effort will continue throughout the next few months, as Sony wants to make sure new PS Vita owners will have fresh games to play.

Resistance: Burning Skies is among the most important post-launch titles for the Vita, marking the second mobile appearance of the franchise developed by Insomniac Games, after the PSP-exclusive Resistance: Retribution.

We’ve already heard a few things about the game, but Sony has now seen fit to present an official description, as well as the final cover and a release date for the Vita shooter.

“Resistance: Burning Skies pulls you into an entirely new dimension of the Resistance universe,” Sony revealed about the game. “Set in a tale of survival during the August 1951 Chimeran invasion of the East Coast, you take control of Tom Riley, an everyday firefighter from New Jersey who is thrown headfirst into the teeth of the Chimeran war machine, forcing him to redefine his notions of duty and heroism.”

Besides using the twin analog sticks to provide an accurate shooter experience, Burning Skies also takes advantage of the front and rear touch controls.

“As most of you know, this is going to be the first ever dual-analog FPS game on a portable device, and has been built from the ground-up to take full advantage of the power of the PS Vita, including front and rear touchscreen controls. The touchscreen controls add a whole new dimension to the gameplay, delivering a powerful portable shooter experience.”

Resistance: Burning Skies is now scheduled to appear on May 29, in North America, and on May 30, in Europe, exclusively for the PS Vita.

Sony has promised that more details, alongside videos and screenshots, will be made available at a later time so, until then, check out the classy cover above.
