Red Faction: Armageddon is rapidly nearing completion, so THQ has just revealed the release date for the title as well as its very attractive cover.

THQ, the game's publisher, and Volition, its developer, have been working hard on implementing new features into the classic Red Faction recipe, in order to capitalize on the success of 2009's Red Faction: Guerrilla.

Now, Red Faction: Armageddon has just received a concrete release date, with THQ confirming that the title will appear on May 31, in North America, and June 3, in Europe and the rest of the world.

The game will pack the same classic destructible environments seen in previous games, but adds in new elements including the Nano-Forge, a tool that manages to repair the destroyed remains.

"Built on the groundbreaking Geo-Mod 2.0 destruction engine, players can take advantage of total environmental destruction, collapsing huge Martian structures on their enemies," says THQ. "Rebuild all that you destroy with the Nano-Forge's incredible repair ability, creating new gameplay scenarios never before possible."

Red Faction: Armageddon's story takes place 50 years after the events of Guerrilla, and sees the grandson of the predecessor's heroes, Alec Mason and Samanya, fight against a previously dormant race of aliens that have invaded Mars and are ravaging the human settlements on the planet.

In order to defeat the aliens, Darius Mason will use all sorts of tools and weapons, as well as a robotic suit called the Exo, which can plow through all sorts of structures, vehicles and creatures.

THQ is also banking big on a movie based on the franchise, called Red Faction: Origins, which will star actor Robert Patrick, who many will remember from his part as T-1000 in Terminator 2.

Red Faction: Armageddon will arrive on May 31 for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but until then you can check out its interesting cover art above.
