THQ has formally announced a new videogame in the Red Faction series. It will be called Armaggedon and the reveal trailer offers a bit of information on what it will be offering, even though the company is not saying what platforms it is targeting and when it is set to launch.

The developer has opted for fast forward in the time line of the series, with Red Faction: Armageddon taking place quite some time after the events the player set into motion in Guerrilla.

The main character will be Darius Mason, who is the grandson of Mars hero Alec Mason and Samanya. As time went by, the conflict with Earth, which was at the core of the series until now, has apparently died down and an apocalyptic cult has been created and gained popularity on Mars, turning the surface into a wasteland that no longer supports life and forcing humanity to live in mines and tunnels that are deep underground.

Darius Mason is tricked, although it's unclear how, to open up a mysterious locked down shaft, which leads deep underground and unleashes a horde of evil mutants that threatens the very existence of human life on Mars. Of course, the man responsible for unleashing the invasion needs to also fight back against it. The cultists need to be taken care of and THQ is surely preparing a twist in the story.

The publisher is promising that the same level of destruction seen in Guerrilla will be offered to gamers, with a wide variety of weapons accessible and with the physics module better built than in previous titles of the series. A superior version of the Nano Forge weapon is promised. It's not clear whether THQ is planning to put together a cooperative mode or what multiplayer options Red Faction: Armageddon is planning to deliver.
