Mobile phone carrier Vodafone and Taiwanese handset vendor HTC Corporation have just released into the wild a new software solution for high-end HTC HD2 device, which is powered by Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. The new upgrade comes in the form of a downloadable ROM, which can be found on the wireless operator's website.

Unfortunately, the carrier does not provide details on what the new ROM upgrade for HTC HD2 includes, but states the following: “You can improve the efficiency of your phone by downloading the latest software version.” Those interested in the upgrade will find it available for download from Vodafone's website here, where it is listed as ROM version 1.66.405.2, published on Monday.

“If you don't want to upgrade your phone's software over the Internet you can drop your phone off at one of our stores and they'll arrange a software upgrade for you,” Vodafone also notes on the website. While this is the latest official upgrade for the mobile phone on Vodafone, it is not the latest solution HD2 has seen, as WMPoweruser notes. ROM 2.10 has previously leaked for the high-end device, with a nice range of great improvements, but nothing was announced officially about it.

Those willing to perform the upgrade on their own will have to connect the handset to the PC via a USB cable, and to make sure that ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center are installed on the computer, in case it is running under Windows XP or Windows Vista, respectively. At the same time, one should also make sure that the battery inside HD2 is charged at least at 50%.

A backup of all data on the phone is also recommended, so as to make sure that no important files are lost during the upgrade process. One should also check on the ROM version currently running on the device, which can be seen on Start > Settings > System tab > Device Information > Version tab. Head over to Vodafone's website for the download and additional info on the matter.
