One of the questions that emerged as soon as Microsoft announced officially the new Windows Phone 7 Series at MWC in Barcelona was whether existing Windows Phones will be eligible for an update. For what it's worth, questions regarding HTC HD2's upgrade to the new OS flavor emerged since last year, and it seems that they might receive an answer as soon as next month, most probably at the MIX10 conference, at least this is what a recent tweet from Microsoft suggests. It has been rumored that HD2 will receive the upgrade, and the phone was recently spotted in a photo where it is reportedly showed running the new OS, so the answer might be a favorable one in the end.

The aforementioned tweet from Microsoft says that more details on the HD2 and Windows Phone 7 Series might be unveiled next month, something that will certainly make enthusiasts hold their breath until then. “To everyone asking about HD2 & Windows Phone 7 Series; nothing announced yet but there may be info coming next month,” is what the tweet reads, and, while it does not say anything specific on whether the handset is to taste an upgrade, this area has been covered by some of the latest rumors, including one that allegedly comes with a proof: a picture of HD2 running under Windows Phone OS 7.0.

The photo in question emerged over at winmo.nl and, while there are great chances that it is a very good Photoshop rendering, it might also be the real thing. According to the news site, HTC HD2's 1GHz Snapdragon processor, coupled with the amount of internal memory it includes and with the large capacitive touchscreen display it sports, are the main features that make it eligible for receiving the new OS. The build that can be seen on the phone is only an early pre-release one, it seems, but the device has it, and that suggests an update might be announced as soon as next month.

According to the guys over at WinMo.nl (via WMPoweruser), the Windows Phone OS 7-powered HD2 is as good as confirmed, and there are also some additional details that we should take into consideration, including: - The device had a current copy of TomTom installed, which launched and ran perfectly fine! So much for no backward compatibility. - It ran fast, faster than the HTC HD2 runs on WM 6.5. - Lastly, the software was multi-lingual out of the box. Hopefully, all previous rumors on HD2 and the Windows Phone OS 7 coming on it will prove true. Stay tuned to learn additional details on the matter.
