Leading mobile chip maker Qualcomm is expected to bring to the market in the not too far future a new product that would fit inside high-end smartphones, the MSM8x60 chipset, which was recently benchmarked and reviewed inside Qualcomm's own mobile development platform (MDP).

The chip is reportedly headed to the market in two flavors, offering speeds of either 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz, and the aforementioned benchmarking was made on the faster product.

Before talking about the results of those tests, we should note a few things about the chip itself, a dual-core Snapdragon product, which is based on the company's own Scorpion CPUs.

Moreover, the chip is paired with the Adreno 220 GPU, which is supposedly capable of offering increased performance at lower clock speeds, in comparison with what the 205 and 200 predecessors could offer.

For these benchmarks, the MDP device came with no operational cellular or Wi-Fi radios, and was optimized for GPU testing, it seems.

Now, off to the test results, offered by the guys over at AnandTech. First, the GLBenchmark 2.0, which is being used to show real-world performance, while rendering the handset's native resolution. The device toped the best result, which was something expected, actually.

In the 3DMark Mobile 2010's 'Taiji' test, the MDP came in first as well, its results being more than double of the nearest contender. It took the lead in Quadrant as well, with a 2851 score.

All in all, it appears that the performance levels this chip can offer are indeed much higher than what already existing products deliver, and the much faster clock speeds it comes with are certainly giving a helpful hand here. The memory inside the MDP was another advantage, it seems.

However, there's no word on the battery drain of the chip, which might be high, especially in real-world usage conditions. However, it remains to be seen which devices would actually include the silicon, and what performance levels they would be able to offer at that time. Until then, you can read more about these benchmarks here.
