One of the mobile phones that HTC Corporation is expected to bring to the market during the ongoing year would be the HTC Pyramid

, which made it to the headlines quite a few times before, and which was rumored to prove one of the most appealing new handsets from the company.

However, it appears that things might not be so, and that the device would actually underperform, even if packed with the latest cutting-edge technology.

For starters, we should note that this device is reportedly including a 1.2GHz dual-core MSM8260 Snapdragon application processor from Qualcomm, which is complemented by an Adreno 220 GPU.

These two alone should enable the yet unannounced HTC Pyramid skyrocket, but it appears that it would actually perform only somewhere above average when compared to other devices that would make their debut on the market during the ongoing year.

When benchmarked using the Smartbench 2011 Android app, the upcoming mobile phone manages to score only 1743 on the productivity test, while toping 1642 on the gaming test.

The first test is focused on the performance of the CPU, while the second tests the handset's GPU performance.

The results are comparable with what other HTC devices can offer, even if they are based on single-core chips. However, the Scorpion design, which offers less performance per clock vs. the Cortex A9 chip, might be the cause for that.

The GPU performance the handset boasts would be only 30% higher than what the Adreno 205 GPU in the MSM8255 CPU can offer, even if the Adreno 220 GPU was touted as capable of providing several times the performance of older chips.

Another test performed on the HTC Pyramid, this time with the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread OS flavor loaded on the device, shows even lower results, at 1728 productivity score and 1403 gaming score.

Undoubtedly, the fact that the HTC Pyramid would be only in its early stages of development at the moment influenced the results a lot, though it remains to be seen how well would the final hardware and software fare in these tests.
