One possible idea for Metal Gear Solid 5 involved the landing in Normandy during World War II, the Cobras and main character The Boss, according to a statement from the series creator.

Speaking as part of a video documentary about the evolution of Metal Gear Rising, Hideo Kojima stated, “Metal Gear Solid 4 wrapped up in 2008, and the dev team took post-project time off right after that. But, of course, we were in a situation where we had to start planning for MGS5. So I started coming up with several ideas.”

He added, “I had several ideas for a game featuring The Boss and the Cobra Unit during the invasion of Normandy. I then handed these plans over to the team so they could take over and make the game. I presented my ideas to the team during the summer of 2008. However, simply dropping MGS5 on the younger staff members was a bit heavy and there was resistance to doing it without my involvement.”

The game would have involved Cobra fighters The Pain, The Fear, The End, The Fury and The Sorrow taking parts in World War II and doing work that would prove crucial to the success of the Allies.

The game would have been tied with Metal Gear Solid 3, where a mention of secret missions during the World War is made, and would have allowed the company to develop these characters and their backstory.

When it was first announced the Raiden powered game, Rising, was supposed to be a full entry in the Metal Gear Solid series, telling the story of the main character from the second game and of how he became a sword wielding cyborg.

At the recent VGA ceremony Konami unveiled a new look for Rising, which is now just part of the Metal Gear franchise, and stated that Platinum Games, of Bayonetta fame, would be handling development under the supervision of Kojima.
