No new big releases

The successful run that the PlayStation 3 began in Japan more than six months ago seems to continue unabated. For the first time since the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation 3 began competing on the market, the Sony made console has managed to sell better than the Wii for more than one month, posting sales of 146,946 at the end of March, as compared with 99,335 units sold by Nintendo.

Unfortunately, the market itself is in a slump, with the software releases lacking much hype and failing to attract more buyers to the hardware side.

During the last week, the hardware charts were pretty much unchanged, mostly because no new and interesting videogames were released for any of the platforms. The Nintendo DS is still a best seller, with 62,400 units sold in one week, followed by the Sony made PlayStation Portable, which managed to shift 48,1000 units in the same period of time.

The PlayStation 3 logged in sales of 20,400, which is well above the usual number of sales posted by Sony, while the Nintendo Wii is at an unusual low of 15,500 units. The Xbox 360 is further back, with 7,800 units sold, just ahead of the PlayStation 2, which posted sales of 5,400.

Kidou Senshi Gundam: Senjou no Kizuna Portable from Namco Bandai continues to be the best sold videogame, with 34,000 copies moved in one week. Mario & Luigi RPG 3 from Nintendo jumped up to number two in the chart, with 33,000 units sold for the Nintendo DS, while Pro Yakyuu Famista sold 27,000 copies in its first week. Monster Hunter Freedom United, for the PlayStation Portable, managed to take fourth spot, while Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu is at number five.

It will be interesting to see whether the PlayStation 3 will manage to remain ahead of the Wii and the Xbox 360 during this week.
