Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has announced today that Ovi Mail, the email service it has built, now has a number of more than 1 million accounts activated. Moreover, the company also highlights the fact that this mark has been reached in only a little more than six months since the service has been launched on the market.

According to Nokia, its Ovi Mail offering is set to prove one of the best options for emerging markets. Users in the developing world, the company says, will benefit not only from the possibility to access an email account, but will also be able to access it from their mobile phones, without the need of a personal computer.

“More than just reaching a company milestone, this proves to us that there is a real appetite in the developing world for these types of tailored services,” said Tom Furlong, head of Consumer Messaging at Nokia. “For first-time email users, Ovi Mail provides a digital identity and we are thrilled by its rapidly rising adoption rate.”

Nokia's Ovi Mail came to fulfill the need for email access in the case of people in developing countries who did not have a PC at hand. According to the handset maker, the most Ovi Mail subscribers came from India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. The company also states that the service is available in more than 180 countries around the world.

In addition, it should also be mentioned that Ovi Mail supports 20 languages at the moment, including Arabic, Finnish, Russian, Simplified Chinese and Thai, which are supported on device only, and Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu, Bengali, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Latin America Spanish, Portugese (Brazil), Portugese (Portugal), Spanish, Tagalog, (UK) English, (US) English and Vietnamese.

Ovi Mail can be easily set up on the mobile phones and is free. Devices like the Nokia 2330 classic, Nokia 2630 and Nokia 5310 XpressMusic are some of the most popular handsets used for accessing the service, Nokia states. The email setup wizard present with the Nokia Series 40 and Nokia S60 devices offers an easy way to set up the service, which can also be accessed over the Internet, via this link.
