Today, Opera Software and Netsweeper, Inc. have announced the signing of a partnership aimed at enhancing the security and Internet content filtering for wireless carriers around the world who distribute the Opera Mini mobile browser.

According to Opera, Netsweeper’s technology is aimed at enabling it to provide carriers with the possibility to better block phishing, fraud, viruses, trojans, or malware, on the handsets that sport Opera Mini on their airwaves.

Moreover, the solution is aimed at offering carriers the ability to block access to adult content or other sites or services that are deemed inappropriate, while enhancing the level of security operators offer to their users.

On top of that, the solution should leverage the latest caching technologies, while being capable of processing interactive, user-generated Web 2.0 content so as to further strengthen online user protection.

“Our operator customers have requested the ability to control and filter content for our Opera Mini browser, due to legal requirements in the countries where the operators are established,” said Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer at Opera Software.

“This partnership with Netsweeper, which has the most advanced and scalable solution in the market today, will make Opera Mini very attractive to the world’s operators.”

Netsweeper’s content filtering solutions were designed to work in real time, the company announced, explaining that its artificial intelligence engines are immediately notified of the URL that users access.

Netsweeper already categorized a number of more than 3.8 billion unique URLs and has an accuracy rate of around 99.9 percent.

Moreover, the company found new ways in which it can identify and block viruses or spyware, and can better protect both the operator’s network and the end user.

“Netsweeper is pleased to partner with an industry leader such as Opera,” Perry Roach, CEO, Netsweeper, commented on the new announcement.

“With the mobile market expanding rapidly and the number of mobile devices with Opera Mini growing worldwide, this partnership represents a fantastic opportunity for not only our businesses but for the operators as well — who will have a distinctive, competitive advantage in the market.”

Opera Mini is considered the most popular mobile browser in the world, with a number of more than 65 million active monthly users.
