Warner Bros. Interactive, the company which now owns the Mortal Kombat rights after the demise of long-term publisher Midway, has announced that the next video game in the series will be launched in the month of April 2011 and will come in a standard edition but also in Kollector's and Tournament flavors.

The PlaytStation 3 version of Mortal Kombat will include an appearance from Kratos, the Spartan warrior that is at the heart of the God of War franchise, with Stig Asmusse, the director of the series, saying “Fans of both games have been asking for this to happen. Kratos belongs in Mortal Kombat, and I'm thrilled about the potential.”

Those who do not plan to get the PS3 edition of the game can pick up two specially tailored packages.

The Kollector's Edition comes with an art book showing off the development stages of the fighting game and with character figurines while the more portable Tournament Edition includes a fighting stick that got all those who are interested in moving around facing other humans in Mortal Kombat matches.

Both the special editions will also include exclusive downloadable content and will be available in limited quantities.

There are also incentives for those who chose to pre-order the game, with classic skin and fatality packs for characters Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile offered for those who shop at GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon.

Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat, has clarified the pre order deals saying via Twitter, that all characters in the game already have 2 included fatalities and added, “Come on guys, do you really think we'd release the game with some characters having only 1 fatality and give the other to retail exclusive?”

The series creator has also said that the new Mortal Kombat title aims to take the players back to the roots of the series, focusing on an experience that is easy to pick up for newcomers while also delivering depth for those who have played the previous titles.
