One of the co-creators of the iconic Mortal Kombat fighting series, Ed Boon, recently talked about the upcoming reboot of the series, and how it takes all of the classic elements of the franchise and polishes them up for a whole new generation of gamers.

After a few not so fortunate titles, including the Teen-rated Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, the fighting series is going back to its Mature-rated roots, and will see the release of the Mortal Kombat reboot, which will appear in the first half of next year.

Now, Ed Boon, one of the co-creators of Mortal Kombat, has revealed just how the new game will have all of the trademark elements, as well as allow the development team at NetherRealm to tell an accurate story for all of the characters in the game.

When asked what the classic MK elements set to make a comeback in the new game are, Boon revealed the following:

"The 2D gameplay, the brutal presentation with all the blood and Fatalities. Then there's the deeper fighting engine, which is not something that we've focused on before, but we've really made a conscious effort this time to make a deeper fighting engine for the Tournament players and the more serious players."

He also said that the story of Mortal Kombat would also play an important role in the new game.

"And then we had the retelling of the Kombat story. When we made those games they were arcade games and we didn't have the kind of data to tell a story, so the MK movie was what a lot of people use as the story for those games. So this is the first time we can tell the story in any detail."

All in all, Mortal Kombat fans are certain to really enjoy this upcoming title, at least according to what Boon revealed.

The new Mortal Kombat title is set to appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, in the first half of 2011, and will see classic characters ranging from Reptile, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Shao Kahn or Raiden.
