Nintendo has announced that a special Netflix application is going to appear today on the 3DS eShop online service, which allows subscribers of the service to watch regular movies as well as a selection of 3D-ready videos on the portable device.

Nintendo launched the console in Spring, alongside a few games and services, but only recently did the device actually receive some of its most important features, including the online eShop, from where owners can download new applications and games for the portable device.

We've already seen quite a few games appear in the eShop, and Nintendo has now announced that today marks the release of the official Netflix application for the 3DS, which allows subscribers of the service who have an unlimited account to enjoy movies, TV shows and videos on the device.

"The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country. Nintendo 3DS truly offers something for everyone."

The new Netflix app for the Nintendo 3DS is available as a free download from the eShop online service, and allows users to enjoy the content on the top screen of the console.

What's more, Netflix and Nintendo confirmed that owners of the 3DS who also have a Netflix subscription will soon be able to access an additional library of select movies that can be viewed in 3D, taking advantage of the console's autostereoscopic (aka 3D without the need for special glasses) capabilities.

Parents worried about their children accessing Netflix are going to be thrilled to hear that the parental control settings associated with the actual Netflix account are also going to be applied inside the 3DS application.
