The recently released Nintendo 3DS handheld console can be used as a controller with the upcoming Nintendo Wii U, even if the Japanese company isn't all that keen on the idea, at least according to some new statements from Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

The Nintendo Wii U was showcased at last month's E3 2011 conference, and wowed the audience with its high-definition capabilities as well as through its unique controller, even if only a single device can be used with a console.

In order to prevent negative rumors, Nintendo mentioned that a 3DS handheld console can also connect to the Wii U, but didn't reveal any big details.

Now, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata described, via CVG, the whole idea behind the Wii U and 3DS connectivity, highlighting that while it is possible, there are limitations.

"First, I would like to answer from the perspective of whether it is technically possible or not. I will say that it is technically possible. However, there are some limitations," he said. "While the Nintendo 3DS is communicating with the Wii or the Wii U, the Wii or the Wii U will not be able to access the Internet, and this technical restriction will remain unless we add some special hardware."

What's more, Iwata wants to prevent customers from getting the wrong idea with this feature, as many could start believing that Nintendo is practically forcing them to buy two consoles.

"If we decide that using the Nintendo 3DS as a controller for the Wii U is the most obvious choice, we will do so without hesitation but, on the other hand, if software from Nintendo for the Wii or the Wii U system could not be enjoyed without the Nintendo 3DS, some consumers might feel that Nintendo is saying that consumers must buy both systems."

Iwata emphasizes that such connectivity between handheld and home consoles has been done with the GameCube and the Game Boy Advance, and, while there was plenty of positive feedback, he doesn't want to rely solely on existing 3DS owners buying Wii U devices, or the other way around.

"So that consumers will not think of Nintendo as a company that made the Nintendo 3DS a controller because it wanted consumers to buy both hardware systems, we will not adopt this idea unless connecting the two systems is the most natural thing to do."

The Nintendo 3DS was released at the beginning of the year around the world, while the Wii U is set to appear in the first half of next year.
