Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has officially announced that it has delayed the upcoming Motorstorm Apocalypse racing game after the tragic events that struck Japan last week.

Sony's Motorstorm series has been around since the launch of the PlayStation 3, and, with the release of the new Apocalypse title, the franchise was set to showcase the platform's 3D abilities.

The new game takes a fresh spin on the racing franchise, this time showcasing its action around cities devastated by earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Sadly, the release of the game couldn't have come at a worse moment, as the whole world is still mourning the devastating events that struck territories like Japan or New Zealand, including earthquakes or tsunami waves.

As such, Sony, its publisher, has announced that Motorstorm Apocalypse will be delayed in Europe, after pushing back its release in those other two territories.

Sony Europe released a formal statement to GameSpot, saying that it is extremely saddened by the events that struck the main Sony headquarters in Japan.

"We are shocked and saddened to see the impact of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues within the Sony family, living and working throughout Japan."

In order to honor their predicament, Motorstorm Apocalypse will be delayed in Europe.

"We are very conscious of the parallels between these events and the underlying theme in Motorstorm and are doing everything we can to be as sensitive as possible to the situation. Although the game itself is already in distribution, we are ceasing any further shipments and removing as much of the marketing materials as possible."

The launch will be delayed indefinitely and pre-orders are currently suspended while all subsequent marketing materials are being taken down.

Apocalypse was already delayed in New Zealand after the devastating Christchurch earthquake, as well as in Japan, after the country was torn apart by multiple earthquakes and a tsunami.

No word yet on whether or not the North American release date of April 12 is affected by a similar delay.

As soon as Sony reveals new dates, we'll let you know.
