EA boss John Riccitiello believes that while motion controls are currently the biggest trend in gaming, they still won't replace the traditional controllers.

Seeing as how all major consoles this generation have some sort of motion controls, many regular gamers are getting worried that all future titles will have support for them, spelling the end for regular controllers.

EA's Riccitiello believes that these two types of controls won't replace one another, and that they can coexist in the near future in order to expand gaming to new audiences that are more interested in new motion controls.

"I think that there will be genres where the gesture-based gaming... will actually be the superior way to play. Dance games, music games, exercise games. It's really hard to imagine an exercise game with your thumbs," he said.

EA is making quite a lot of money with such titles, including the EA Sports Active fitness game.

"It's really hard to imagine that I'm going to play a future edition of Medal of Honor, or Call of Duty, or Battlefield, hiding behind my couch, making a gun out of my finger. I've tried driving with gesture-based controls; I don't really like it."

He continued, "My guess is that some genres will be best on Move over Kinect, over controllers; some genres will be best on Kinect over Move and controllers, and some genres will be best on controllers and then there will be some blend."

Even if Riccitiello believes so, both Microsoft and Sony are banking big on implementing their motion controls into hardcore experiences, like racing or shooting games, including upcoming titles like Forza Motorsport 4 or Killzone 3.

Kinect has been extremely popular since its launch, managing to shift 8 million units, while the PlayStation Move is slowly but surely becoming a mandatory peripheral on the PlayStation 3.

What do you believe? Is Riccitiello right that motion and classic controls will combine in the future or are they two different things that exclude one another?
