Mass Effect 2 will receive more downloadable content, according to an announcement made by BioWare, its developer, using the game's Cerberus Network online feature.

The Cerberus Network, in case you haven't really noticed the computer screen on the right when you boot up Mass Effect 2, displays various news about the game and any of its previously-released downloadable content.

Now, the service hosts a special announcement concerning the fate of Mass Effect 2, before the release of the third game, at the end of the year.

According to BioWare, the studio responsible for the extremely popular franchise, the daily news updates on the Cerberus Network will discontinue on January 24.

They will be back for three weeks during this year, however.

"A week of posts will precede a downloadable content release, and two more weeks will lead up to the release of Mass Effect 3," said the update on the Cerberus Network.

This is great news, as the last piece of DLC, The Lair of the Shadowbroker, was a hit with fans when it was released on September 7 for the PC and Xbox 360, largely thanks to the fact that it reconnected the main hero (or heroine), Commander Shepard, with Liara T'Soni, a romantic interest from the original Mass Effect.

Now, it seems that the new DLC will act as a prequel to the action in the future Mass Effect 3, which was recently confirmed during the Spike TV Video Game Awards.

The new DLC is set to appear for all platforms, including the PC and Xbox 360, as well as the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2, which will be released on January 21.

Mass Effect 3 is set to be released at the end of this year for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and will finish the story of Commander Shepard.
