Activision has confirmed that it plans to release a new patch, called 1.6, and a fresh Map Pack for Call of Duty: World at War, eager to rekindle interest in the Treyarch-created shooter just as the Infinity Ward-made Modern Warfare 2 is approaching its release date. Unfortunately, the company did not see fit to name an actual date for the patch and the new content so players interested in it will need to keep an eye out.

Players will be getting three new multiplayer maps as part of the Map Pack, called Battery aka mp_drum, Breach aka mp_bgate and Revolution aka mp_vodka. Those who have kept playing the game will be happy to get some new ground to battle on.

Gamers who have loved the Nazi zombie combat mode more than the single player or the multiplayer can also look forward to taking on the undead menace on a new map, called Der Riese, which allows the player to explore an abandoned research facility complete with teleporters and something called the Pack A Punch Machine.

The 1.6 patch, which will be required to play the new content, is also set to eliminate most of the crashes remaining in Call of Duty: World at War while also enhancing the support for mods and adding some more features to the Friend lists and to the Safe Mode options.

Call of Duty: World at War proved popular with gamers, even if it was again set in the over-exploited World War II. Activision is now pinning even greater hopes on Modern Warfare 2, set to return the action to the current time frame. The game, which should arrive on November 10 on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC, is widely expected to be the best sold title of 2009.
