A more playful approach

When Peter Moore, the head of EA Sports, began talking about the upcoming Madden NFL 10, he emphasized the new look of the game, with a graphics and movement engine set to deliver a photo realistic experience.

Well, he seems to have forgotten to mention that the new engine would only be coming to the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii version of Madden NFL 10 getting an art style adapted to the power of the gaming console while delivering an intuitive cartoon-inspired look, offering players a lot of information about the game.

As you can see from the screenshot released by EA Sports, the characters will not look anything as real football players. The obvious similarities are those with Valve's Team Fortress 2, with the physical attributes of the various players set to show the gamer what they are good at.

The Defensive Pack position should be tall and lean to emphasize that he is quick, agile and capable of snatching the ball on the defense, while the Linebacker is muscular, showing that his main ability is blocking other players. The Quarterback has his signature wide shoulders to signify his leadership role, while the Running Back has a stocky body designed to show off his strength and speed.

EA Sports is also saying that the look of the stadiums will match that of the characters, as they will replicate the look of their real world counterparts while also offering over the top elements.

Still, EA Sports is stating, via a press release, that Madden NFL 10 on the Nintendo Wii will have “the elements of authentic NFL football you have come to expect from the Madden NFL franchise.” It all seems better put together and more attractive looking than the All Play initiative of last year, which failed to register significant sales.
