Fans of British singer Lily Allen know that she’s repeatedly said she doesn’t plan to stick around in the business for that much longer – at least, not at the expense of the family she wants to have. This would not be the first time that Allen claims she’s determined to quit making music in order to have a baby and get a chance at a normal life, but it is a first in terms of getting so specific about the decision, as the Daily Mirror can confirm.

Lily is featured in the latest issue of Glamour UK magazine, where she talks about her dreams of becoming a mother and a wife, and why she simply can’t stand to make music anymore, at least for a period of time. Having a successful career in pop music and being a full-time mother and wife is impossible, the singer believes. Therefore, the time has come for her to choose sides: and she’s definitely choosing having a family before her career.

I plan to have children in the next year. Because people have stopped buying music, the only way to make money is to tour – and I’m not willing to do that with babies around. A part of the way I became who I became was because I was subjected to a certain lifestyle from an early age. My parents hung out with famous people, but we didn’t necessarily reap the same financial benefits. So there was a part of me thinking, ‘I wanna be like those people.’ And once I’d achieved it, it didn’t make me happy. So I don’t want to put my kids in that position. I’d rather set up businesses, put a roof over our heads, then move to the country to shelter them for a bit,” Lily explains.

32-year-old builder Sam, with whom Lily is now trying for a family, has a lot to do with this change in perspective. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. Having Sam around gives me confidence and that I’ve got him to lean on, whereas before I felt really lonely. Like it was me fighting the rest of the world. I don’t feel like I’m fighting anyone any more. I feel pretty leveled out. Today is a typical day. I’ll be home by six and I’ll make dinner for Sam, who’ll get back from watching football at nine. I cook something different every night. Tonight I’ll make chicken, lemon and coriander parcels. Then we’ll watch Newsnight and go to bed,” the singer adds.

To those who are telling her that she needs to stop being so “lame” and just live her life, Lily has one thing to say: though she’s still young, she’s already done music and played the fame game. Regardless of what many may say, it’s incredibly lonely at the top and she’s not about to go down the same road again, not after meeting Sam.
