Singer says she will focus on fashion, rediscovery of old values

British singer Lily Allen, although not popular with the vast majority of music critics and / or fans, has, so far, enjoyed the support of many who agreed with her idea of what music should sound like and, in particular, of how it should only express real thoughts and not just contain words that rhyme. Admittedly sick of the hypocrisy in the industry, Allen has just confirmed that she will be taking a break from singing starting March next year, as the BBC informs.

Lily repeatedly stated in media interviews that she did not see a future for herself in the industry because she simply could not comply with the demands it made from artists. Singers, herself included, had to act a certain way, look a certain way and, above all, sing a certain way – and she could not see herself doing any of that. A long time ago, Lily Allen decided to quit music, but it’s just now that she’s taking the first steps towards that.

For starters, she will focus on developing her own record label, while also just spending “some time in the home I’ve built for myself.” She will also try to be less hypocritical from now on. “I’ve stopped everything, I haven’t got a computer and I haven’t got a BlackBerry. I don’t do emails or anything now. I’ve decided to stop being so hypocritical and consume things and pay for them. I buy music in vinyl and buy newspapers. I support the industry I’m in. I’m a neo-luddite, that’s how I describe myself,” Allen explains.

Also part of the change is wanting to go into fashion with her sister. Allen, who’s always been admired for her unique style, which is heavy in vintage, ‘50s-inspired accents, will try to make fashion more accessible by opening a fashion rental store called Lucy in Disguise. “It’s about making fashion democratic. That’s the idea behind it. It’s about getting really nice clothes but letting people rent them for affordable prices so they can go out and feel like a million dollars and it won’t cost them a million dollars,” she adds.

Back on the topic of music, Allen says her label will try to offer support to young artists who are just starting off, without crippling their creativity and asking them to be anything they’re not. Meanwhile, granted she is truly serious about her “retirement,” fans will be able to see Lily Allen for the last time in concert with Dizzee Rascal the O2 Arena in London.
