Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Retribution - The Last Standalone might just be longest name for a video game release for 2011, but it's also a new development for Relic and THQ, taking the very popular Last Stand mode from its real time strategy game and publishing it as a lower priced stand alone experience.

The Last Stand can be bought on Steam for just 10 dollars and all those who enjoy what it has to offer and want to experience the full multiplayer, which is competitive rather than cooperative, and the single player campaign can then upgrade to the full version of Retribution for a lower than usual price.

Jeff Lydell, who is the producer of Dawn of War II Retribution, said, “We saw this as a unique opportunity to introduce new players to the Dawn of War franchise as well as expanding the player base for the already popular Last Stand mode.”

The development team at Relic says that Retribution, which allows access to the single player campaign for all six races in the universe, has been a hit with gamers and that most of those who played the original release of Chaos Rising have moved on to the new game for the gaming needs.

Jeff Rydell has said that, “Going exclusive through Steam helped drive awareness with their millions of users by way of banners and message support. So by the time we opened the beta up to all Steam customers, we had a huge number of people playing.”

The executive has also said that the move from Games for Windows Live has been very important to the community of players that love Dawn of War II and that getting a unified multiplayer system has been a goal for Relic since the game was initially launched.

At the moment, Relic is developing Space Marine, a single-player action game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
