Video game publisher THQ has announced that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, an action game that will be played from a third-person perspective, is set to be launched in August, which is more accurate than the previously talked about summer launch window.

The publisher has not settled on an exact date yet, but the game will be playable at the same time on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC.

The player will be using the enhanced physical abilities and the superbly crafted armor of Captain Titus, a Captain in the Ultramarine chapter of the Emperor's own Space Marine, as he battle the enemies of mankind.

Initially, the player needs to defend an Imperial Forge World that is being threatened by an invasion from the Orks, with support still weeks away.

As the game progresses, the protagonist discovers that behind the Ork invasion action is taken by the Chaos Space Marines, making the task of protecting Imperial property much harder.

The developers at Relic Entertainment have said that initial Ork-focused combat will focus on the overwhelming force of the Space Marine Captain, who will take on mobs of enemies at the same time while the Chaos enemies will be much tougher, forcing Titus to be creative when he needs to take on more than two enemies at the same time.

The game will have a hybrid model, mixing range combat with close quarters fighting, and the developers do not plan to include any cover system.

As Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine progresses, the gamer will have a chance to customize his weapons and his abilities, with the battles being different, based on his customization.

This is the first time that the Warhammer 40,000 universe is headed to gaming consoles, after glorious appearances in the Dawn of War series on the PC.

THQ is also overseeing development on a Warhammer-based MMO called Dark Millennium Online.
