LG's Optimus 3D to Debut at MWC

South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics might bring to the Mobile World Congress its first handset with a 3D mobile display, one that would be called, as expected, LG Optimus 3D.

In late 2010, LG came to the market with the first handset to include a dual-core application processor, the LG Optimus 2X, which has just arrived on shelves in South Korea.

Moreover, the company teased the upcoming availability of a 3D-capable smartphone in the near future, and it seems that the Mobile World Congress might be the place where this device is set to make its debut.

In this respect, the upcoming launch might not come too much as a surprise, especially since the recently unveiled LG G-Slate for T-Mobile was also rumored to sport 3G capabilities.

“3D mobile display is one technology that isn’t 3-5 years down the road... You’ll be very surprised shortly, of an actual working 3D device from LG. I’ll leave it there before I say too much,” James Choi, marketing strategy and planning team director at LG Electronics global, said during the CES 2011 event in Las Vegas.

In other words, LG was working on such a smartphone, and we might soon learn more on it.

But this is not all. The guys over at allaboutphones.nl (via Android Community) found a special page over at PhoneHouse dedicated to the LG Optimus 3D smartphone, and also published what they claim to be an invite to a February 14th press event in Barcelona, during which LG would unveil the said handset.

“Into the new dimension. Experience the new world that LG is opening,” the said invite reads.

All points towards the same outcome: the MWC show in February is the place where LG would announce the upcoming availability of their first 3D smartphone.

What exactly would this mobile phone include, and whether it would indeed be a glasses-free 3D device, it remains to be seen. Keep an eye on this space for more info on the matter.
