South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics has just unveiled the LG GW880, a handset that should soon become available for purchase in China via the country's largest wireless carrier, China Mobile. The new device is running under China Mobile's OPhone operating system which, most of you should know already, is an in-country developed flavor of the popular Google Android platform.

The new handset is expected to arrive on the market in China with a series of appealing capabilities, among which we can count a large 3.5-inch display that boasts an 800 x 480 (WVGA) resolution and sports full touch capabilities, a 5-megapixel photo snapper, as well as support for the carrier's 3G network, based on the TD-SCDMA proprietary standard, and support for CMMB (China Multi Media Broadcasting) for mobile TV tuning.

Other specifications of the new device are reportedly including a built-in GPS receiver, Bluetooth connectivity options, support for widgets, support for up to 24 icons directly on the home screen, mobile Internet, email, media player for enjoying photos, videos, and music, as well as access to China Mobile's application store.

For what it's worth, it seems that China Mobile will soon have in store a wide range of appealing mobile phones for its users. The carrier already announced officially the launch of Dell's Mini 3i, another device based on its operating system, and now it unveils the LG GW880, which, one should agree, seems to be more appealing than the LG GW620, the mobile phone maker's first Android-based handset, aimed for global availability.

One way or the other, the competition on the smartphone in China is believed to become fiercer in the near future, as all three major carriers there are just ramping up for offering 3G services to Chinese users on various appealing handsets. Unfortunately, no exact details on the availability of the new LG GW880 emerged for the time being, so stay tuned to learn more.
