Announced at the beginning of the year and showcased at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, LG's top-tier smartphone Optimus Black is said to be more customizable than thought originally.

According to Pocket-lint, the sales package of the smartphone will include an extra back cover. Apparently, the manufacturer plans to release different colored back covers which can be purchased to change the appearance of the phone.

So there will be red-colored LG Optimus Black or white Optimus Black smartphones, which is odd to say the least, if we take into consideration the name of the device.

However, the piece of news has already been confirmed by LG:

“In terms of what is included in the box, that hasn’t been decided, but it's most likely to be one back cover. You’ll be able to buy more back covers to change the appearance of the phone,” said James Choi, marketing strategy and planning director of LG Electronics.

It seems that the decision was made based on the feedback from LG customers, who seem to be in dire need of customization for their phone's look.

“One of the biggest complaints we have is that smartphones are too similar and too masculine,” Choi added.

LG intends to go back to the roots, to the times when handset manufacturers were designing devices for a specific audience.

The Optimus Black is the first LG handset to feature a NOVA display, which is designed to be the one of the brightest and clearest mobile screens.

The manufacturer states that the NOVA display emits 700 nits (candela per square meter). For comparison, Apple's iPhone 4 manages to display 500 nits and Samsung Galaxy S only 300.

There's no information regarding the phone's release date or price tag, but LG said that the smartphone would be rolled out in the first half of 2011.
