Kojima Productions, as the developer, and Konami, as the publisher, have offered fans more information about both the story and the gameplay of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the videogame set to offer narrative content to bridge the gap between Metal Gears Solid 2 and 4. The fresh title has the tag line “Lightning Bolt Action” and will feature Raiden as the main protagonist, showing how the character became the cybernetically enhanced ninja that players met in Guns of the Patriots.

The studio has promised that despite all the hacking and slashing shown in the official E3 trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Raiden will not be the type of character who can take on all the enemies in a level and defeat them. Stealth is still crucial to the experience, but the actual speed movement for the main character will be greater than in the titles that featured Solid Snake, mainly because of Raiden’s body modifications.

Also, the cutting mechanics, called Zan Datsu, will permit gamers to take non lethal approaches, with the precision of the mechanics allowing for enemies to be incapacitated without being killed. The developers would not talk about the control, saying that they are still working on exactly how they will be implemented to deliver the biggest precision possible.

Shigenobu Matsuyama, who is the producer working on the game, told the audience, “You saw [how she] pulled out the guts from a cyborg,” adding “At times you could even take information. This is how you proceed in the game, but what's so different from other action games is you really have to strategise what you take, and you really have to aim and angle where you want to cut. So it's a little bit one step further than the normal sword action games in the market today.”
