Konami Digital Entertainment has offered the first official screenshots and the first bits of information about Downpour, the next game that will be delivered in the long-running Silent Hill series, which is set to be launched at some point during the autumn of this year.

Konami confirmed that Downpour is the official name of the game, after speculation about it popped up in the video game world a few days earlier.

The story will focus on Murphy Pendleton, who is a convict which gets trapped in the strange and evil world of Silent Hill and must face his own demons in order to escape the horror.

The beginning of the game will see Pendleton crash with his prisoner transport and end up on the edge of town, unprepared for the terror that awaits him there.

In the manner of previous Silent Hill titles, the main character will likely have to face his past as well as a cast of monsters before coming out of Silent Hill.

Konami says that the new game will use a game engine which allows for bigger environments that managed to keep the cramped and claustrophobic characteristics of the space gamers have visited in previous Silent Hill games, with two new areas, The Devil's Pit and The Diner, added to the town.

Konami has also confirmed that Daniel Licht, who is best known for the work he has done on the serial killer television show Dexter, is the man who will be creating the soundtrack for Silent Hill: Downpour, aiming to deliver a series of tracks that aid in creating a world filled with mystery and terror.

Downpour will probably also allow Konami to evolve its psychological evaluation system, which made its debut in Shattered Memories.

Silent Hill: Downpour will be launched on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony and a more concrete date will probably be announced around the E3 trade show.
