Killzone 3, the upcoming first-person shooter exclusive to the PlayStation 3, has just received a big piece of information, straight from its developer, Guerrilla Games, who confirmed that the title would have a split-screen co-operative mode throughout its campaign.

Killzone 3 is set to appear in February, and will boast a lot of great features, including technical achievements like full stereoscopic 3D or compatibility with the PlayStation Move motion control peripheral.

But that's not what's important, at least for hardcore shooter players, who wanted more details about the game's single and multiplayer modes.

Now, Killzone developer Guerrilla Games admitted that the new game would have a split-screen co-op mode right in its single-player story campaign.

According to the developer, the team managed to find a lot of extra power after completing Killzone 2, so it was quite easy to implement the new co-op system.

"We found a lot of power after we completed Killzone 2. Just to give you an example on the graphics side: we pulled a level from Killzone 2 into the Killzone 3 engine and it ran at 50 percent. That's how much power we've been able to find," said Guerrilla Manager Herman Hulst.

"You can see it in split-screen co-op. We had to do the double rendering anyway."

According to his last statement, it seems that if you want to play split-screen with a buddy, you won't be able to enjoy the stereoscopic 3D effect.

Still, it's a pretty good trade-off, as not a lot of people have expensive 3DTV sets or an extra pair of special glasses for the device, and won't experience the 3D option.

Hulst didn't reveal anything about an online co-op mode, but expect an official announcement as we approach the game's release date.

Killzone 3 is set to appear exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on February 22.
