Rumors about the release of Bungie's highly anticipated FPS have finally been confirmed. Up until now, all signs indicated a September launch and today, Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business has made it official: Halo 3 will be released on September 25. Europe's getting it the day after.

"'Halo 3' is much more than a video game release; it's the biggest entertainment event of the year," said Peter Moore. "On Sept. 25, we intend to deliver a finale that will go down in entertainment history and leave people around the world with an experience that will be shared and enjoyed for years to come."

Of course all the leaked screen and in-game/gameplay footage kind of took the edge off a little, not to mention the Beta (for the few who got their hands on it of course), but Halo 3 is not the kind of game to get bored of. Even if the Beta has started on a general level now, there's a lot more to be expected.

So, September 25 is the day when gamers can get their mitts on the FPS from Bungie. They say it's the last, as Halo for the Xbox 360 was supposed to be a trilogy. You don't honestly think that do you. Even if Bungie's got their hands full with Halo 2 Vista and Halo Wars, when Halo 3 launches, Bungie will see such astronomical figures that they just won't have the option of not making another. So leave Master Chief out, but keep the gameplay and control scheme - they're perfect.

Beginning today, May 16, Microsoft Game Studios is kicking off the Halo 3 multiplayer Beta, which will provide you with an early look at some of the multiplayer elements of the FPS via Xbox LIVE. Join the battle and "finish the fight" if you don't mind a little spoiler such as the Halo 3 Beta.
