New handset to bring a WVGA display and lots of other high-end features

HTC, the Taiwanese company that constantly and quickly grew to become one of the world's most famous handset manufacturers, has yet another ace up its sleeve, after the highly-appreciated Touch Diamond and Touch Pro Pocket PCs. The newcomer from HTC is apparently called Touch HD and it seems to be the ultimate full-touch handset.

Recently appeared over at the MoDaCo forums, the new HD is said to come with a wide TFT touchscreen display that sports a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels (WVGA), similar to the one that the display of Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1 has.

Like HTC's latest Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, the new Touch HD runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and uses the cool TouchFLO 3D interface. Also, the handset brings GSM and HSDPA connectivity, internal GPS, a 3.5 mm headset jack, a 1350 mAh battery, a quite powerful 528 MHz Qualcomm 7201A CPU, 512MB of ROM and 256MB of RAM. Even more, HTC has packed, for the first time in one of its handsets, a 5 Megapixel camera (which doesn't seem to have flash but it's likely to feature auto focus). No word yet on the internal memory of the new HTC or on the presence of Wi-Fi (which would be a nice addition to the above-mentioned features).

All of Touch HD's goodies should fit into a sleek case that measures 115 x 62.8 x 12 millimeters (almost the same dimensions as those of iPhone 3G).

At the moment there are no official details regarding the HD, but it's said that HTC will make it available before Christmas.

While in terms of design the Touch HD is not too different from the iPhone 3G, Samsung Omnia, Samsung Instinct and all the others, feature-wise, this new HTC apparently outruns each and every one of them, even Apple's handset, considered by many the best thing ever since mobile phones appeared. In conclusion, lots of users in need of a full-touch handset, who might have pondered on buying an iPhone 3G, could be lured by the HD and then whisper a soft "goodbye" to Apple's device. And I say, what would ol' Steve do about that?
