The HTC Desire is now available for purchase in the United States via wireless carrier Cellular South, which has just added it to its offering, and which priced the high-end device at only $149.99 on contract.

The full price tag for this device is $469.99, but users can get it at the subsidized price upon the signing of a 2-year contract agreement with the wireless carrier.

“Introducing the HTC Desire, powered by the Android 2.1 operating system. One of the fastest smartphones available, it features the revolutionary 1 GHz Snapdragon processor,” the wireless carrier notes on its website.

Launched in February this year, the HTC Desire is one of the nicest Android-based devices that landed on the market in 2010, while also being the twin brother of Nexus One, the first handset to be sold via Google's own web store.

The HTC Desire comes to the market with a 3.7-inch touchscreen display (480x800 Super TFT with capacitive touch response), and with a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, LED flash and HD (720p) video recording capabilities.

Powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, the new device offers support for MicroSD memory cards of up to 32GB, while landing at the wireless carrier with an 8GB card included in the package.

Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) and 3G connectivity options are also available there, along with GPS turn-by-turn navigation and voice guidance and one-click access to the Cellular South Discover Center and Text CS customer support.

The handset sports Android 2.1 with HTC Sense and provides access to the Android Market, while packing pre-loaded apps like Qik, Google Goggles, and Google Shopper, and great social networking options.

“Get social with Friend Stream. Merge your Facebook, Twitter and Flickr accounts into one seamless flow of updates. This makes it easier to keep track of what your friends are up to and see images and links they're sharing,” the carrier notes.

It also includes Google Voice Search, Google Maps with Navigation, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook and Amazon MP3, as well as a wide range of other features and capabilities. The HTC Desire can be purchased from Cellular South's website here.
