The mirrorless camera market is on the rise, as many customers are looking to spend a little more cash in order to purchase a smaller camera that packs similar image quality as the bulkier digital SLRs.

Following the compact camera market descent, customers are looking for cheap mirrorless alternatives that will save them thousands of dollars in comparison with similar DSLRs and pack enough features to please even those who know a thing or two about photography.

A month ago, a rumor said that Olympus was preparing to announce a new entry-level OM-D camera in the first months of 2014. With the date getting closer, new info has emerged regarding this upcoming mirrorless model.

According to 43rumors, the new Olympus OM-D camera could be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 that takes place in Las Vegas staring January 7 through January 10.

While the E-M1 has become Olympus' new flagship OM-D camera, the Nippon manufacturer has said that it was not planning on replacing the E-M5, as the latter model is addressed to an entire new category of consumers.

It seems that the rumored entry-level OM-D will actually be the successor of E-M5. The camera is rumored to pack the same image processor as the E-M1 as well as the current E-M5 sensor, and it might have a few features stripped in order to sell it for a lower price.

Although the new model will be E-M5’s successor, the latter will continue to be sold even after the new OM-D hits the market and will probably be replaced at Photokina in September 2014.

In addition to that, other rumors state that Olympus will launch along with the new entry-level OM-D a 25mm f/1.8 lens that will be cheaper than the Panasonic 4/3 Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4.

All that being said, in less than a month we will find out for sure which of these rumors are true and what the name of Olympus’ new mirrorless model is.
