Dragon Age: Origins was widely praised for the way it delivered a classic role-playing experience to players while also pushing the genre forward in terms of mechanics and storytelling, but gamers were not too impressed with the many pieces of downloadable content that BioWare launched once the game was out.

The development team apparently learned its lesson about new content and says that, once Dragon Age 2 is out, the team will aim to create more focused and more interesting DLC to keep fans interested in the long term.

Mike Laidlaw, who is the lead designer working on the Dragon Age series, has told Games on Net that, “We will be continuing to release content for Dragon Age II after launch, and I feel that we’ve learned some valuable lessons about what resonates with the players.”

He added, “For instance, we intend to keep the focus on Hawke this time around; keeping your character consistent and progressing was a pretty key request we received from our player base, so we’re happy to deliver.”

Origins did not have characters with a set identity and that meant that the DLC focused on exploring elements of the in-game universe or on showing how various characters developed.

The second game in the series has a different structure, exploring how one man, the titular Hawke, rises from his humble beginnings as a refugee to one of the most important players in the in-game universe, with his decisions shaping the world.

Dragon Age 2 has a launch date of March 5 in the United States and March 8 all over Europe, with the game coming to the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Players who are not yet convinced about its quality will be able to experience a demo of the role-playing game at some point towards the end of February.
