As fast food restaurants are struggling to come up with new offerings that are both cheaper and more filling than their regular products, Denny’s comes in to join the fun with the Fried Cheese Melt.

This new sandwich will go on sale starting August 24 and, as its name suggests, is made of deep fried cheese, placed between two slices of bread. Alas, it has no meat, The Consumerist jokingly notes.

As we also reported a while back, more and more junk food restaurants are trying to capitalize on the interest KFC and McDonald’s generated with their Double Down and the off-the-menu McGangBang.

Carl’s Jr. was also trying out a new sandwich that would push the envelope not in terms of height (as the above McDonald’s sandwich did), but in terms of length. It’s now Denny’s turn to come out with something new.

“Have you ever been eating mozzarella sticks and thought, ‘these would be soooo much better in a sandwich’? Or maybe you’ve been snacking on a grilled cheese sandwich and wondered how improved it would be if it also had fried cheese sticks between the bread? If so, then Denny’s is about to roll out the perfect sandwich for you,” The Consumerist writes.

The Fried Cheese Melt will be included on the value menu, which means those interested will be able to get it for just $4 – that is to say, more value for less money, if an explanation was required anymore.

“The restaurant chain recently announced a bunch of new items to its value menu. And while most of them are nothing new – quesadilla, fried shrimp – the ‘fried cheese melt’ caught our eyes and stopped our hearts,” The Consumerist explains.

“The sandwich, which should sell for $4, is ‘made with four fried mozzarella sticks and melted American cheese grilled between two slices of sourdough bread. It is served with French fries and a side of marinara sauce.’ It and the other new items should be available starting Aug. 24,” the publication further says.

Though it will probably catch on very well, the new sandwich (if that’s what it can be called) is already getting lots of heat in the media and especially in the blogosphere.

Headlines such as “Would you like a heart attack with your sandwich?” (or along those lines) do come up in a simple search, with many saying that some sort of regulation should see that such products don’t reach the general public.

Then again, it’s up to each and everyone to decide what they want (or don’t want) to eat.
