On April 12, for a period of six weeks

Last year, KFC rolled out a brand-new product for testing in two different locations in the US. The gimmick that made this menu special was that it had no bread or bun, its place having been taken by two slices of boneless meat. Clearly, testing went well, because the fast food giant is coming out with the Double Down sandwich on April 12, as the Huffington Post can confirm.

The novelty of this sandwich, to the outrage of health experts and nutritionists all over the world, is that it replaced the bread that usually went into making a sandwich with two pieces of chicken breast, either deep fried or grilled. Clearly, the latter option is the healthiest one. In between these two pieces of meat, one can find several pieces of bacon, cheese and, of course, the Colonel’s sauce. As the Post also puts it, no veggies were harmed in the making of the Double Down.

“The new KFC Double Down sandwich is real and it’s coming April 12th! This one-of-a-kind sandwich features two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken filets (Original Recipe or Grilled), two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. This product is so meaty, there’s no room for a bun! The Double Down comes in two versions – Original Recipe or Grilled,” KFC says on the official website.

“The sandwich was initially made available in two test markets – Rhode Island and Nebraska. KFC’s Double Down gamble paid off, and they’re rolling out the creation nationwide starting on April 12. Their decision was first announced on April 1, leading some to believe it was an April Fools’ joke. Turns out, the only gag involved was the reaction of vegans. […] The grilled version has ‘only’ 460 calories and 23 grams of fat, while the original recipe version has 540 calories and 32 grams of fat. That’s nowhere near some early speculation in the Vancouver Sun that one sandwich might set you back 1228 calories. Still, it might be wise to run a few extra laps before crossing the road for this chicken,” the Post says of the new KFC menu.

While many companies are being forced to come out with more health-conscious products, KFC seems to stand alone in creating a sandwich made entirely of meat, several health (and not only) publications point out. To compensate for that, the fast-food giant has pledged to donate the “unneeded” bread to food banks across the US, the aforementioned e-zine says.
