Courteney Cox and David Arquette announced their separation in October: just weeks later, David was hitting the party circuit like he was 20 again. Though he insisted at the time he’d always been a party-animal, he’s checked into rehab shortly after New Year’s Eve.

The actor, who was married to Cox for 11 years and has a daughter with her, is said to have taken the separation very badly, turning to drink to mend a broken heart.

People magazine has a statement from his rep, in which confirmation is offered for the rehab bit, but no details on the problems that landed him there are revealed.

“The actor, who separated from wife Courteney Cox in October, has entered a rehab program, his rep confirms to People. The rep had ‘no further information’,” the mag writes.

However, sources close to the star are telling the tabs that David took the end of his marriage to heart and started drinking again. He’s in rehab now for alcohol and depression, it would seem.

“He is in there for drinking and depression, not hard drugs. Rehab was inevitable. He is dealing with a broken heart. He can’t handle all the changes in his life. All his inner demons came out,” says an unnamed source.

“He’s just not handling this situation well. He’s really depressed,” the same spy adds. David is now in a live-in facility, where he’ll probably remain for at least 30 days.

Though he once admitted on Howard Stern that he did not take the separation from Courteney all that well, saying that his shrink had told him he was depressed, in another recent interview, he laughed off rumors of alcohol abuse or emotional problems.

Speaking with George Lopez on his show a while back about his non-stop partying, Arquette said he’d always been “wild” like that, the paparazzi simply never got the chance to capture him on tape.

“I am a fun loving, great person. […] I’ve always been a wild man. My nickname was ‘David Good Times.’ I like running around, having fun. I like meeting people!” Arquette said at the time, as we also informed you.
