Darksiders II is now in development at Vigital Games at THQ, but when the first game in the series was being created, there was no guarantee that it would be a success and everyone linked to the title saw it as a big risk.

[ADMARk=1]Jay Fitzloff, who is a marketing manager working at Vigil Games, stated, “Darksiders was a huge risk because it was an old game in a new shell for us and for THQ because it’s a new studio, nobody there had made a console game before and it was a new IP. On paper, to be honest I don’t know why THQ went for it.”

He added, “I mean, the tech demo really nailed it, but I think any other publisher would just say ‘No way, but more power to you’, but they did. Then the game itself was a risk – we’re talking about a game that has an almost old-generation mentality where we’re willing to challenge you and not spoonfeed you the whole time”

Fitzloff believes that one of the main reasons Darksiders was green lit by the publisher THQ was the engine developed to power the game, which could be used for other titles even if the game itself failed at retail.

The first Darksiders video game, starring War as the main character, has managed to sell at least 1.2 million copies for THQ.

The sequel will star Death as the main character and will see the Rider of the Apocalypse exploring a number of other fantasy-themed worlds while Death is occupied battling both angels and demons on Earth.

Darksiders II will be launched in late June on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 and the company is also planning to launch a version of the game for the Nintendo Wii U home console.
