“It's coming soon,” Verizon employees are told

Motorola DROID, the high-end device Motorola launched in November last year on Verizon Wireless' airwaves with Google's Android operating system on board, is expected to enjoy in the near future a software update that will bring the latest iteration of Android to its users, at least this is what Verizon employees are told, it seems. A leaked internal memo from the carrier is what brought the news on the update, according to the guys over at Android Central.

As most of you might already know, this is not the first time we learn about the Android 2.1 software update for the Motorola DROID, as the solution was said a few days ago to be on its way to all handsets put there this week. Motorola said that the new OS flavor would land on the DROID before Sunday is here, but it seems that they actually jumped the gun on this, and they soon after announced that no software update would come this week.

This time around, the internal document from Verizon mentions the Android 2.1 update for DROID, but only says that it will roll out soon, without providing a specific time frame. This might suggest either that the new OS flavor has passed testing and that it will be deployed in the near future, or that things are moving towards it being certified on Verizon's airwaves, which means that “soon” does not mean “within the following days.”

One way or the other, both Motorola and Verizon already promised that Android 2.1 would become available for the DROID, and there is a nice range of enhancements that users will receive via the update, that's for sure. As one can read in the leaked internal memo, the software will be sent to users over-the-air, so we'll just have to wait and see when the two companies decide to make the move. Keep an eye on this space for further updates on the matter.
