The owners of a Motorola DROID mobile phone have now yet another reason to rejoice, as the mobile phone maker has announced officially that it plans on delivering the Android 2.1 update for their handsets as soon as this week. The software update for DROID was already rumored to arrive in the near future, yet now all is confirmed, and we also have a release time frame for it.

[ADMARk=1]“Hi all-- we know you are frustrated with the lack of details regarding Android software upgrades and we sincerely apologize for not being able to share info sooner. We're happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to DROID will start to roll out this week, and we will have more information to share on other device upgrades later,” is what the mobile phone maker states on its Facebook page.

There are not too many things that can be said here, except maybe for the fact that there are a nice range of enhancements that the new software solution for the DROID is expected to bring along. One of the most appealing ones, and also one of the most wanted, is that multi-touch functionality that users of a Nexus One by HTC can already enjoy on their handsets.

Both the Motorola DROID and the Android 2.1 come with support for multi-touch, yet the handset's owners in the United States haven't yet had the chance to taste the feature on their devices. However, most of you might already know that Motorola MILESTONE, the European version of DROID, does feature the capabilities, and it seems that Android 2.1 should bring them to US users too.

The new software solution was said before to be based on the 2.1 update1 software that was recently pushed to Nexus One users, so DROID owners can only sit tight and wait for it to enhance the user experience their handsets can deliver. For the time being, however, there are no specific details on what other improvements the update will bring along, but it shouldn't be too long before more details emerge, so stay tuned to learn them.
