Search engine-based company Google released at the beginning of this week a new version of its Google Maps for Android, namely Google Maps 3.4, which came to all Android phones out there via the Android Market. One of the main features of the new version of Google Maps is multi-touch functionality, which is now available for users of a Motorola DROID too, after being delivered via an over-the-air update for Nexus One by HTC.

The lack of multi-touch in high-end devices available in the United States market with Google's Android operating system on board has been a hot topic for the past few months, and it seems that the Mountain-View company finally decided to offer the enhancement to its users. Since Nexus One and Motorola DROID are two of the nicest Android phone out there, it was only natural for all eyes to look at them for the feature. Those interested in seeing Motorola DROID with multi-touch in Google Maps should take a look at the video embedded at the bottom of this article.

But the functionality won't become available only for these two phones in the end, it seems. Most of you might know already that Motorola announced not too long ago that it planned to include multi-touch in most of its future devices, and that it already had the feature available for the owners of one of its Android phone outside the US. Not to mention that Google itself is reported to have confirmed that multi-touch would come to most Andorid devices out there.

“The Android 2.0 framework includes support for multi-touch. As with other Android platform technologies, such as the text-to-speech engine, operators and handset makers can choose to implement this technology. Regarding the specific pinch-to-zoom functionality included in this new update, once we make this software update (2.1-update1) available to operators and handset makers, they can update their Android-powered devices accordingly,” is what Google says, according to androidcentral. In other words, since Nexus One received the feature, DROID should also receive it with the new update, and other devices will enjoy it as well. Stay tuned for more.
