It's a huge city, developer says

BioShock was one of 2007's greatest titles, taking players on a fantastic voyage through an underwater city that had fallen prey to its inhabitants who had torn it apart and were genetically mutated. The second game also takes place in the underwater dystopia which is Rapture, but a few years after the events in the first game.

Even though BioShock 2 is still months away from completion, Jordan Thomas, the creative director of the studio in charge of the BioShock franchise, 2K Marin, has talked about the third installment of the series and how it might also take place in Rapture if the story has enough substance in order to allow it, saying that the city is “one of the characters we don't want to let go.”

“I think Rapture remains fertile for as much expansion as a team sees in it. I absolutely believe that there might be future games set in Rapture in whatever time period, but I would also say that I think that the Bioshock brand is big enough that it could evolve. Currently, we find Rapture fascinating, that a city that large begs further exploration, a city with that much history, but I can't speak to specific sequels past Bioshock 2 now, but I could speculate and say merely that [...] Bioshock is flexible enough to see lots of expansion down the road, and a lot of different directions.”

We've already heard another 2K developer reveal the strategy behind the BioShock franchise, saying that it will have as many sequels as the story will allow it, but whether that story will stay in Rapture or go somewhere else is still a mystery.

Hopefully though, we will have an even greater experience this time around with BioShock 2 and we will see Rapture like we’ve never seen it before in the first game.
