A deeper in-sight on game endings

How much satisfaction do you have when you end a game? I know I for one was thrilled when I finished my first game and when the ending was so surprising and as the one in Silent Hill 2; you just gotta love it.

CVG's Best Game Endings Ever show some interviews concerning opinions and preferences related to game endings and there are as many opinions out there as there are games.

I agree that a list of very good endings can be made but interviewing a mass of people will only bring out different opinions one after another. The shier diversity of games makes it impossible for an interview to shed light on the matter. For example: one guy says that his favorite game ending is the one in Call of Duty when Cpt. Price carries a wounded soldier in his arms taking him to safety and another comments on the ending of Super Mario Land claiming for that to be his favorite as Mario flies off to space in a ship accompanied by a hot chick. So, there you have it. The two opinions go together as well as an elephant does with a fly.

I think good game endings are the multiple endings found in games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill where the actions you take in the game determine the fate of the ending making it different every time. Kill one guy less in one of the stages or forget to pick up or hand out something and you have a totally different outcome for your hero.

The ending of a game is very important because it should conclude the whole story but it doesn't always make you feel like your efforts have been rewarded and that's why CVG also has a list of The Worst Game Endings Ever. You should check it out.
