Not appealing, but practical

BenQ is looking to reach huge popularity and record phone sales numbers by developing a new phone concept. Not only has the company drawn the lines, but actually it has made it real too.

The slider phone concept has proved to be a huge success, as it eventually became popular and fashionable among a wide range of people. Such a groundbreaking idea is exactly what a mobile phone producer needs in order to win a considerable head start in sales and make itself even more known.

BenQ Siemens is quite serious about reinventing the slider concept into a new one. They have taken the old slider idea and reinvented it, although this brings several disadvantages too. The company has developed the SL98 phone model, which allows the display screen to slide from the phone's body. There is also a small visible part of the screen meant to show when the user receives calls and offers important information.

The greatest advantage about the new slider concept is that the screen is constantly protected from scratches and impact breaking by the phone's entire body. Moreover, the phone owner rarely uses the display screen at its full capacity, when viewing images and videos. In situations other than these, the small screen can be used just as efficiently. Manufacturing costs are considerably reduced like this without having to cut back on functionality.

Another advantage is that more of the handset's surface is occupied by the buttons, which makes it considerably easier to handle. Still, the phone might end up being rather bulky, as it will have to house the sliding display screen.

BenQ Siemens's concept looks quite promising, although they will probably have to work a great deal on the design features in order to make it the success that they expect it to be. At this time, the slider phone is only a concept, with few hopes for it to hit the stores any time soon.
