Samsung has just announced that American Airlines plans to offer 6,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 mobile tablets onboard select flights beginning later this year.

According to the new agreement, American Airlines will replace the current personal entertainment devices in premium cabins on transcontinental flights between New York’s JFK and Los Angeles, JFK and San Francisco, and Miami and Los Angeles, as well as international flights to and from Europe and South America and transcontinental flights departing from Boston to Los Angeles.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the thinner version of the original Galaxy Tab 10.1v, which was showcased at the 2011 Mobile World Congress, back in February.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 measures 256.6 x 172.9 x 8.6 mm, which makes it 2.3mm thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1v model.

The tablet is delivered with Android 3.1 out-of-the-box and features TouchWiz UX UI on top. “Earlier this month we made history by launching the world’s thinnest large screen tablet currently available and today we unveil another first with American Airlines’ selection of the Galaxy Tab 10.1,” said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 is equipped with a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor (ULP GeForce GPU).

Samsung's Honeycomb tablet sports a mediocre 3-megapixel rear camera, as well as a secondary 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

Through our agreement with Samsung, American is the first North American airline to offer a branded tablet onboard its aircraft,” said Virasb Vahidi, American Airlines’ chief commercial officer.

We are working hard to revitalize our fleet and invest wisely in new products and services to modernize and enhance the travel experience. Working with Samsung to outfit our premium cabins with the innovative Galaxy Tab will give our premium customers a modern and innovative in-flight entertainment experience,” added Vahidi.

On related news, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi edition is currently available exclusively at the Best Buy Union Square location in New York City, but starting June 17 it will be available in all stores across United States.
