Last night at the 2010 American Music Awards, Katy Perry performed a unique version of her latest hit single, the inspirational “Firework,” by having a choir of boys sing the introductory lines.

A few days ago, the star teased on Twitter about the performance, warning fans not to expect her to sing the same version of the song they can hear on the album.

“Just finished AMA rehearsal... I am so excited about this remix performance. It’s going to be a mixture of adorable & gorgeous. #AMAs,” Perry tweeted.

Indeed, an amazing performance it was, as MTV News can confirm. As the children sang, Katy descended from the ceiling, dressed in a gorgeous red gown.

She took over the singing and, in just a flash, the boys from the choir were replaced by male dancers. Also in a flash, at one point in the song, Katy’s dress was ripped apart to reveal a red leotard.

“Meanwhile, backdrop screens showed a slew of fireworks as Perry’s dancers shot sparklers through handheld gadgets,” MTV says of the fiery performance which was, because of the pyrotechnics, one of the best of the night.

“The pop star ended the visual light-fest on a high note, singing the last few notes of ‘Firework’ while her dancers lifted her high up in the air,” the same report says of the performance.

Speaking with MTV a few months back about what inspired her to pen “Firework,” a song that now fronts one of the many anti-bullying campaigns underway from various groups, Katy said it was a tribute to individuality.

“I think that’s why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework,” she said at the time.

“It’s just up to them, and a lot of times it’s only us that’s standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who we possibly can be, so that’s why I wrote it,” the singer explained.
