South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics is gearing up for the release of the LG Optimus 3D smartphone, the first 3D smartphone in the world, and has just unveiled that it would load it with the world’s first three dimensional AR browser, which comes from augmented reality (AR) pioneer Wikitude. With the new Wikitude 3D browser, users would be able to enjoy a better interaction with the environment, the company announced.

Unlike 2D AR, which would display only overlapped objects, 3D AR will deliver places, landmarks and objects in three dimensions, which would enable users distinguish them more easily.

With the browser, users would be able to discover details about their surroundings easier than before, in addition to enjoying access to related Wikipedia articles and Twitter information.

“AR technology has been praised for its potential to replace the ‘abstract’ realities of standard mobile browsers with ‘actual’ reality streamed through the camera of the smartphone,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO and President of LG Mobile Communica-tions Company.

LG’s cutting-edge hardware and 3D API software technology now pushes this reality a step further.”

The Wikitude 3D browser some with info on more than 100 million locations all around the world, delivered by more than 1,000 content providers.

At the moment, the browser comes with support for a number of 12 languages, but more of them should be added to the list soon.

“The synergy here is simply perfect and the resulting partnership has the potential to take both AR and smartphones to a whole new level,” said Martin Herdina, CEO of Wikitude.

The Wikitude 3D browser will be made available for download via LG World (LG`s dedicated application store) in mid-June, for free.

“The LG Optimus 3D introduces a number of innovative first technologies, including the world’s first dual-core, dual-channel, dual-memory architecture, as well as the first full 3D platform providing glasses-free viewing, recording and sharing of 3D content,” LG announced.

The handset will hit shelves in summer in Europe, and should arrive in more markets around the world soon after.
