Aims at activating around 3,000 more sites in 2010

Wireless carrier Hutchison 3G UK (3 UK) announced recently that it managed to activate its 10,000th 3G base station, which was deployed in South-East London. According to the company, the new cell site, meant to deliver better 3G connectivity and more capacity to the area, is only one of the hundreds of other sites it managed to activate during the last month.

Moreover, the company also revealed that the deployment of the new cell site was part of its plan to greatly expand the 3G coverage it offered in the UK. The mobile phone operator's network should reach a number of around 13,000 sites during the ongoing year, and the 10,000th site activated site offers it the possibility to deliver 3G coverage to almost 93 percent of the population.

“Over the past two years the continued growth of internet communications, smartphone use and mobile broadband uptake have brought the need for good 3G network coverage into sharp focus for millions of consumers. Our network is already the biggest 3G network in the UK. Now we're adding new coverage and capacity across the country to meet demand and bring the benefits of 3G to people who've never had access in their area before,” Graham Baxter, CTO at 3 UK commented on the new announcement.

The mobile phone carrier also stated that it was working on the consolidation of its 3G network infrastructure with T-Mobile through the Mobile Broadband Network Limited joint venture. According to 3 UK, MBNL offers both wireless carriers the possibility to provide enhanced 3G services to a wider range of customers in the country, while the number of cell sites that would be usually required for the process.

Here's what the company says on its website on the coverage it offers in the country: “We've already built the UK's biggest 3G network and by the end of this year our customers will have an even bigger, better, faster network. This means better coverage when it comes to making calls or using the Internet on your mobile. And a faster service for our Mobile Broadband customers.”
