Nintendo has announced that the new Pokemon Black and White videogames will be launched in Japan on September 18, exclusively on the DS line up of handhelds. They are developed by Game Freak, a studio, which specializes in Pokemon titles for the Japanese giant, and are the first to bring entirely new content to the series in quite some time.

The company has not talked about launch dates for North America and for Europe but gamers can expect to see them launch late in 2010 or early next year. The publisher is continuing its tradition of releasing two slightly different versions of the same game at the same time in order to encourage players to work together and share Pokemon between their games.

Pokemon Black and White will be the first videogames in the long running franchise that offer new characters and areas since Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Considering that remakes like Platinum, Heart Gold and Soul Silver sold more than 1 million units, the two fresh titles will likely be even bigger successes.

Nintendo has not offered a lot of information on Pokemon Black and White, beyond the promise that all aspects of the experience will be reworked and that some groundbreaking new features will be included.

The White Yang Pokemon, named Reshiram, and the Black Yin Pokemon, Zekrom, have been confirmed as being the mascots of the two titles and Nintendo has revealed that a further 22 fresh characters will appear in the games. Another feature has been unveiled, called C Gear, allowing the player to upload data from the game to the Internet and to their home computer. Pokemon Black and White will also introduce the first female Pokemon handler, Professor Araragi.
